My sister and I designed a website as a birthday card for our mom’s birthday one year. That was the first time I used the web as something other than what a “normal” website is for.

Something many people do is create a website for their wedding, as an invitation, a place for information or for guests to confirm their attendance.

It is a website made for you and your wedding guests. Which has me thinking, what other websites can be made just for you and your close ones?

Websites as gifts

– An interactive "choose your own adventure" poem for a loved one.

– A digital love letter

– A fun mini game. Like one Talia Cotton made for her friend’s birthday.

– A digital collage/scrapbook filled with memories.

– A time capsule. For example, for a parent to collect things (writings, photos, drawings) and only show it to their child when they’re a certain age.

– A digital recipe book for a loved one

– A story of someone's life for their birthday

– A web magazine or zine about a friendship or relationship

Collaborative websites

– A family/friend group magazine, accessible only if you have a password. Maybe every issue is written/created by a different member.

– A letterbox for a group of people to write messages to each other anonymously

– A wiki or dictionary about a group of people

Personal websites

– A website as a replacement for social media: share photos of trips, life, etc. like a personal blog but just for your close ones (could be password-protected)

– Bucket list tracker, updated every time you complete a goal (add photos, write about the experience, etc.)

Just how we get creative and crafty with paper, ink and paint, we can also try out the web as a medium to tell personal stories, and share them with our loved ones.

A website might not be the same as a physical object, but the web allows for different things, very worth playing around and having fun with.

I have a newsletter where I send out new posts (and maybe extra stuff too)
